Applying for your Sheila Coates Foundation award
Everything you need to know. Tips for a stand-out application.
At Sheila Coates Foundation we want to fund schools and colleges to support autistic students. We’re keen to direct our funding to those who need it the most, as quickly as we can. We try to make the whole process as simple and quick as possible.
We love seeing great ideas come to life - and it's easy for us to spot a strong application. If you want to give your submission the best possible chance, here are some top tips.
1. Know the score
Before you type a single word, make sure you read our scoring criteria. This is our guide and we will be using this to rate your application. This is exactly what we'll be using to assess your application, so think of it as your blueprint for success. Read it, understand it, and keep it in mind as you write. Remember:

2. Every letter counts
We've kept the character count tight for a reason - we want to hear your best ideas, not a full history of your school or college. Keep it focused, clear and to the point. Make sure your application is:

3. Don't rush it
Every round, we receive applications within an hour of opening. We love the enthusiasm, but take your time. Get input from autistic students. Talk with colleagues. Read what kind of activities we have previously funded. A considered application always stands out.
4. Involve autistic students
Involve autistic students directly in co-producing your application. Their lived experience is essential to shaping initiatives that truly reflect and meet their diverse needs.

5. Know the difference between activity and impact
Questions 2 and 3 of the application form are important. One asks you about what you plan to do. The other asks you about the difference it will make. Make sure that your response addresses the question that is being asked.

6. Give your application some sparkle!
We are on the lookout for ideas with a difference! A bold, creative, or thought-provoking application will spark our interest and score well. Show us something fresh!
